Going off-plan sets Vidant North’s pharmacy director on a path to leadership

As a junior in high school, Amy Bennett set her career sights on caring for animals. But conversations with her mentor at the animal hospital at which she worked and Leslie Wells, a pharmacist at Halifax Regional Medical Center, sent her aspirations in a different direction.

The Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, native graduated from Campbell University in 2008 with a degree in pharmacy. Bennett served as staff pharmacist at Halifax Regional from 2011 to 2016, when she took on the roles of clinical coordinator and informatics director. In July 2018, she was promoted to director of pharmacy and now oversees a staff of seven pharmacists and 22 pharmacy technicians.

“My biggest role now is leading the department through upcoming changes,” Bennett says. She is most proud of leading her team through a construction project that began two weeks after she started her new role

With three young children at home, Bennett’s off hours are “consumed by children, [youth] football and dance class,” she says. “I love watching my children do things they love to do, but seeing my husband as a dad is my favorite thing.”

The theme of family carries over into her work at Vidant North. “We genuinely care about each other, just like a family,” she says. “I want [my team] to be happy and enjoy their work and the people here.
